I discovered a Roman amphitheatre hidden behind shop frontage

On my first walk around, I encountered Mormons, markets, mobility scooters, the omnipresent Mt Etna and more.

This site includes the ancient limestone quarries of Latomie del Paradiso. There are also ancient ruins, including amphitheatres from the ancient Greek and Roman periods.

The name Ortigia comes from the Ancient Greek órtyx, or "quail". The city was a Greek colony, also home to Archimedes, the famous mathematician.

A walk around Trastevere, up a hill to views and then across the Tiber to the Pyramid of Caius Cestius, the tomb of a Roman Egyptophile.

I was nearing the end of my 2018 trip to Italy, and the weather was warm. These are shots from another walk around Rome. Romans love a fountain, so that's where I begin.

I was there to walk the famous Appian Way, an ancient Roman road that connected the capital to southern Italy.

A short train ride west of Rome, Ostia Antica is the preserved site of the ancient port of Ostia, which served as the primary port of the imperial capital.

It was the first full day in Rome, the final destination in my 8-week epic trip around Italy, and I was off to the Colosseum, Arch of Constantine and the Palatine Hill.

Shots taken from evening into night of the Piazza del Campo and Duomo di Siena.

On my first full day of exploring Siena. Through the old town and around the edges with views of the surrounding countryside.

These photos are my first impressions of Siena, including Palazzo Salimeni, Piazza del Campo, and the stunning Duomo di Siena.

Laid out in the 16th and 17th centuries, there are great views across the River Arno of the city and of the countryside in the other direction.

Arriving in the afternoon, I dumped my luggage and went for a walk, strolling through the town, across the river into the main tourist site, and back out again.

Construction completed in the early twenties, this one-time automobile factory is famous for the rooftop test track. Car manufacturing ended here in 1982, and the site was converted into a shopping centre with architectural renovations by Renzo Piano.

After checking in, I took a quick walk by the Po River, starting at the 17th-century built Castlello del Valentino. The weather was cold and grey, with only a few people out, including some rowers on the river.
