A short bus ride from Palermo to the settlement of Monreale. On the slope of Mt Caputo, overlooking the Palermo Valley, the former Norman stronghold has a world-renowned cathedral. The town was developed by the Norman kings for hunting.
Other buildings obscure a good view of the cathedral, and it's so difficult to get a good shot of it. Monreale became the seat of the Bishop of Palermo during the Arab conquest, and the cathedral was built there when the Normans subsequently conquered the area in 1072. The adjoining Benedictine monastery was built in 1183, when it became the seat of the Archbishop.
